Every local has their favorite coffee spot in Charlottesville.
A simple Google search will result in countless options downtown and in the Greater Charlottesville area. We want to offer an inside look into all of the lesser-known (but celebrated) coffee shops, roasteries, and gathering places to grab a good cup of joe.
For Cozy Workspaces
Visiting town with a work deadline? We’ve got you covered.
Bright, airy, and great indoor/outdoor spaces to get in the flow.
This is the perfect spot to set up in a corner and get to work, all the while enjoying delicious high-quality coffee (and even something incredible for breakfast or lunch from their Vegan menu)
If you are looking for a spot that gets your ideas flowing, surrounded by the hustle of our small but mighty city, this is great for people watching and document collaboration. Check out their first location: Mariebette.
Perfect for meetings, there’s a little something for everyone in the coffee and food department. Just don’t try for a video call unless you’re ok with background noise. Check Grit’s website for multiple locations.
An incredible coworking and event space with a built-in coffee shop, and a setting that’s ready to impress. Located in an impressive spot (an old bank with massive columns) on the Downtown Pedestrian Mall.
To Reconnect with a Friend
One of the original coffee shops in Cville – in fact: our Editor worked here as a Barista and Baker as her very first job after moving here 20 years ago! It’s got a great vibe (think worn wood and tartan flair). Check out all of their locations here.
A go-to for meetings in Crozet, this coffee shop serves up great coffee and warm breakfast sandwiches, with plenty of seating in and out.
Just a short walk (or drive) away from The Yellow Mug, this local favorite’s outpost in Crozet is cozy and complete with old and new friends mingling around comfortable furniture housed in a bistro vibe with tall ceilings and the clattering of coffee mugs.
A corner shop within walking distance of both breweries and the Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall, this spot is best approached by foot so as not to fall prey to Cville’s notoriously challenging parking. (If you are arriving by car, there’s a small lot nearby, but we suggest parking at The Omni and walking over.
A new(er) addition to the Cville Coffee Scene, this spot boasts excellent fair weather cafe-style seating outside. It’s located in Cville’s business district, and an easy walk to The Ting Pavilion.
For the Serious Coffee Connoisseur
A new arrival in Cville, this Roaster is vet-owned and operated, and boasts small batch, hand roasted coffee beans for purchase. This is a perfect place to stop in, have a look around and get a personal tour from owner, Mike Klemmer. If you’re staying at an Airbnb, or you’re not happy with your hotel coffee, this is a must stop! The coffee consistently receives rave reviews, and is becoming a beloved fixture for the local service industry, first responders, and active military personnel + vets.
Small batch roasters offering excellent coffee in Ix Art Park. Grab your coffee to go and stroll through Cville’s one-of-a-kind outdoor art installation.
Coffee roasted on-site with plenty of room to sit, Shen Joe (as the locals lovingly call it) boasts more than one location but we’re partial to the Downtown spot on Preston Ave.
A beautifully curated coffee shop from humble beginnings, this is a great spot to grab a cup and people watch, located in “the purple building” on West Main Street.
Sultan Kebab and Otto’s for great Turkish coffee
Less coffee, more food, but still two spots that are within walking distance of The Downtown Mall and perfect for stopping in to get the cup you crave.
With the feel of an Italian espresso bar, this tiny shop is where students and professors meet. It’s a favorite local spot located within the historic and bustling Fry’s Springs neighborhood.
For Play Dates
A creative indoor play spot for kids and their parents, this shop also features an “adult zone” to work and meet.
Founded by local mom, Katie Kishore, this is coffee shop with a cause…and lots of heart. Find this spot in the YMCA and let the kids run around a bit. This cafe employs people with cognitive disabilities, and is the perfect feel good spot to enjoy a hot cup of coffee.
